Denmark: EU goal must be 90% greenhouse reduction by 2040

Denmark’s climate minister, Lars Aagaard, urged the European Union to increase its climate goals to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This announcement was made on X.com during the #COP28 climate talks in Dubai. Aagaard hopes other EU countries will follow Denmark’s lead, especially since the EU has already committed to a 55% cut by 2030. His call for heightened ambition aligns with recommendations from the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change made in June. The urgency of the situation is underscored by Europe’s climate monitor, which reported that 2023 is set to be the hottest year on record, with record-breaking temperatures observed over several months and seasons.

Denmark’s climate minister on Wednesday called for the European Union to ramp-up its climate change ambitions and commit to slashing greenhouse gas emissions 90 percent by 2040.
