Japan Commits to Coal Reduction and International Aid at COP28

At COP28, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida committed to reducing Japan’s coal dependency and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. He announced plans to halt new coal plant construction without emission controls and to increase financial support for developing nations through international lenders. Kishida also pledged to work towards tripling global green power and to contribute $10 million to a fund aiding climate-affected developing nations. Additionally, Japan will support a new fund within the African Development Bank and expand loans by $9 billion for other major development banks.
