Canada Urges Japanese Investment in EV Battery Minerals

Canada is seeking increased investment from Japanese companies in the development of critical minerals for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, following a bilateral agreement aimed at facilitating Japanese automakers’ access to the U.S. market. Ambassador Ian McKay highlighted the significance of the deal signed in September, which is part of a strategy to establish sustainable and reliable EV and battery supply chains with like-minded partners. This collaboration could reduce Japan’s reliance on China for critical minerals and enable Japanese automakers to benefit from U.S. EV tax incentives. With abundant reserves of essential metals, Canada is poised to become a key player in the global EV battery supply chain, offering funding and support for Japanese mining ventures. Recent partnerships, including those between Prime Planet Energy & Solutions and FPX Nickel Corp., as well as Panasonic Energy and Nouveau Monde Graphite, underscore the growing synergy between Canadian resources and Japanese technological expertise.
